ENF Veterans Hides Program
HUNTERS, WE NEED YOUR BIG GAME HIDES!
As hunting season is upon us, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks’, Elks National Veterans Service Commission requests that hunters save, salt and deliver big game hides to local Elks Lodges. The Lodge will clean and prep the hides for shipment to Arkansas where they will be tanned and prepared for shipment to Veterans Hospitals for use in the hospitals’ leathers recreational programs. Additionally, hides are prepared to be made into gloves used by wheelchair bound veterans to protect their hands.
Hunters: when you are successful in your hunt, if possible and practical, please save the animal hide for use in the Elks leathers/hides program. Insure that as much “meat” as possible is removed from the hide and then liberally salt the hide with common table salt.
Then roll up the hide - hair side out. It takes about three containers of table salt for the average deer hide - you cannot use too much salt. The only hides not requested are sheep as they contain too much lanolin. The Lodge is actively participating in the Hides/Leathers program this year.
