Seven local scholars, three students of the month and ten top ROTC students were recognized by the Reno Elks Lodge on May 28. The awardees and their parents were invited to the Lodge for a free dinner and awards presentation.
This year two students sponsored by the Reno Lodge made it all the way to the finals in the 'Most Valuable Student' Scholarship contest and one made it to the state level of judging. This contest is a program of the Grand Lodge of the BPOE, which gives more money in scholarships each year than any non-governmental organization. All finalists recieve a $4,000 scholarship to the college or university of their choice. State level qualifiers earn a $1,000 scholarship from the Nevada State Elks Association.
In addition to the Most Valuable Student winners, the Reno Lodge also awarded four $1,500 scholarships to local High School Students from within the Lodge's service area. These scholarships are intended for students planning to matriculate at a Nevada institution of higher education who earned an A in American History in High School.
The Reno Elks Lodge has a very close relationship with the local battalions of the ROTC. These battalions assist the Lodge each year by collecting canned and dry food for the annual food basket delivery program. The ROTC students also box the food and prepare it for delivery. In recognition of efforts of the ROTC, the Reno Lodge awards a $100 savings Bond to a top student from each battalion as determined by the battalion commander.
There are ten ROTC battalions in the service area of the Reno Elks Lodge.
The student of the month program is for recognition of a top student for each month from high schools in the Reno Lodge's service area. This year, three high schools participated by naming a student of the month. Each Student of the Month recieves a $100 savings bond from the Reno Lodge.
