For the third consecutive year, the Reno Elks Lodge has participated with the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. This year, the Lodge operated a food booth, a dunk tank and had a walking team entered in the Relay.
PER Lenny Wahl served as logisitics coordinator for the entire Relay event this year. Lenny's wife, Chris, is a cancer survivor, so the event has special meaning for them. Lenny did a great job of coordinating the resourses available. Through his leadership the Lodge provided lunch for Cancer survivors on May 30, then served food for participants throughout the evening with all proceeds going to American Cancer Society. The Lodge then served breakfast on May 31 for all of the hearty souls who stayed the night and walked for cancer research.
The Relay team was recruited and organized this year by 2003-2004 Esteemed Leading Knight, Mike Elmore, and did a great job. All participants took inspiration from the efforts of Lodge member Patrick O'Shaunessey, who, despite his handicap, walked a mile for cancer research.
The dunking booth was operated by Frank Reynolds and 2003-2004 Lodge Esquire Bill Toles. Always a highlight of the event, Relay participants had a great time dunking and being dunked in the tank. PER Bill Dreher went in clothes and all!
Drug Activities coordinator, PER Dave Pressler, could not be present this year, but sent 'Elmo the Elk' to pass out drug awareness liturature at the event. Lodge grandchild Kelsie Dreher was Elmo this year.
